To operate legally and safely in South African explosive atmospheres (HazLoc), all polymer-based equipment (conveyor belts, pipes, and cables) must meet the following criteria. Use this checklist to audit your current inventory.

1. Regulatory Framework & Standards

• [ ] SANS 60079-0 Compliance: Does the equipment meet the “General Requirements” for explosive atmospheres?
• [ ] SANS 10108 Classification: Have your underground areas been correctly zoned (Zone 0, 1, or 2 for gas; Zone 20, 21, or 22 for dust)?
• [ ] SANS 10123 / SANS 10086-1: Is there a documented control plan for undesirable static electricity in your surface and underground installations?
• [ ] IA (Intrinsic Awareness) Certification: Does the finished product have a valid IA certificate from an Approved Test Laboratory (ATL) in South Africa?

2. Physical & Conductive Properties

• [ ] Surface Resistance Limits: For non-metallic parts in Zone 0 or 1, is the surface resistance $\leq 10^9 \Omega$ (or $\leq 1 \text{ G}\Omega$) to prevent brush discharges?
• [ ] Conveyor Belt Conductivity: Does your belting comply with SABS 1173 standards for electrical resistance? (Typically requires resistance $< 300 \text{ M}\Omega$).
• [ ] Anti-Static Flooring: If applicable, does the floor resistance to earth fall between $50 \text{ k}\Omega$ and $1 \text{ M}\Omega$ as per SANS 10086-1?

• [ ] Percolation Threshold: Has the conductive carbon black (e.g., Printex XE2B) been loaded at a high enough concentration to ensure a continuous conductive network?

• [ ] UV & Chemical Resistance: If used in coastal or acidic mine water environments, is the carbon black grade (e.g., Kappa 70) providing sufficient UV stabilization?
